Plan

Innovators plan a script, instructions and physical or digital prototypes as user testing assets for each concept. For initial prototypes, the goal is to build something quick and scrappy that can easily be revised and re-tested.

The two testing assets needed:

Scripts

What tasks do we want users to test & how will we prompt them without steering them?

Prototypes

What are the most cost effective & quick ways to build prototypes that support the script’s tasks?

Build

Once a plan is in place, Innovators can begin creating the testable assets for each concept. These could be as simple as flashcards that represent a digital UI and 3D prints. To stay agile and keep costs low, develop user testing prototypes in-house, only sourcing from factories and fabrication shops where it’s critical for successful user testing.

Schedule

Once users from target demographics are recruited, schedule and test prototypes with them. Interactions are recorded & archived just like the user interviews.

Test Prototypes

Recording

We prepare scenarios for users to interact with prototypes to assess if they're intuitive and well-designed solutions.  We may ask them to talk us through each step to have a clear sense of how they are perceiving the experience.

Instructions

We may simulate a real-world scenario like only providing pre-written instructions a product is intended to come with for users to follow.

Prototypes

3D prints and rapid prototyping methods will in most cases provide quick and accurate versions of designs we want to test.
