Design Goals
Smartwatch in Disguise
Fossil’s first two-hand hybrid smartwatch is for those wanting to track activity and receive notifications while having a discrete classic watch look.
Theme Development
A square pillow-shaped case was chosen for its balance of aesthetic appeal, and larger internal volume which helped fit key tech components. The minute and hour hand needed to be cleverly designed for multiple functions including telling time, tracking the date, and indicating sleep and fitness goal progress.
Intuitive Function
As shown in the wireframes and quick video below, the hands come together, point to zero with the red tail, then move to indicate the percentage of completion for goals like steps on the 0-100 ranged value scale. The red Minute hand tip behaves similarly to indicate date.
A. Minute hand tail indicates ranged value for steps, sleep and custom goals.
B. Minute hand tip indicates time telling & day-of-month mode when toggled.
C. Pushers act as phone shortcuts & trigger data readout for A and B above.
